So, the Councils have lost the employees' pay and now there's a rumpus.

I wonder how many small/private firms are in the same situation but can't bleat in the nationals and get a result.

It's a tricky situation, with us one way or another picking up the tab for any Councils' losses through this unwise investment, yet hard working private firms and charities will probably go under.

I think the Govt should give us all Govt jobs.

There are usually (to date anyway) plenty going. You just don't have to be too fussy.

We have an EA in my family and he is a councilor. One of the councils where I use to live, was run by a sacked postman.
Councillors only get to be councillors if people vote for them.

Don't you always wonder about the sort of people who put themselves up for it though?

and I wonder about the sort of people who vote for them too:D

I've worked polling stations for years. It's the only time I see my local councillor if I'm in a local station. I always get the "sorry we missed you card" when I'm at home :(

I always vote. If the local councilors are rubbish, I will spoil the paper by writing something on it like "not one of these people are worth a vote".

I also know of a councilor who raised his family on benefits, until he could finally become the MP for the area.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

You are wasting your time writing that as the only person who sees it really is one of the counters. They are going through hundreds/thousands of ballot papers late at night after being up since 6.30am and they just put it in the totally spoilt ballot paper pile. Candidates do watch the counters but they are only concerned with Xs for themselves!

The pile that is looked at closely by candidates and returning officer, if it's a close election, is the "query spoilt". This maybe where the X is exactly in one box or someone has ripped the ballot paper in two but the intention of their vote is clear.

My (limited) experience is that local councillors come in four flavours.

    1. Genuinely want to help their local community and have some time on their hands and the organisational skills to do a good job.
    2. Want to control other peoples' lives because they feel inadequate in some other way
    3. Ambitious political type.
    4. Wants to use the job for some corrupt end, eg it used to be normal for publicans to stand as local politicians to prevent new licenses being issued.

I think in most cases, 1 is either the biggest single group or even an outright majority. It isn't always the case sadly.

Well it's nice to be right but I quite like England and Britain (and most of my family and friends live there) so I hope everything works out ok.

I agree. And I think it will be OK in the end.

It was last March when the press brought it to the attention of Icesave savers that never read the small print.

Northern Rock, Lehmans, Bear Stearns, B&B have all failed in the last few months.

What about those of us who have had fixed rate bonds much longer than that?
