Hi all,
Me and my brother are both full time university students and we live with our sister, who owns the house and pays council tax at the full rate.
I have been told that she should be able to claim a discount as she is the only person in the house who is eligible to pay?
The other occupants of the house include a younger sibling at school and our mother who does not work.
Thanks for replies,

You are correct in that you and your brother are disregarded students but it still wont reduce the council tax due whilst your sister and mother live in the property. There will be no council tax discount as there are two occupiers aged over 18 who are not otherwise disregarded (sister and mother).I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.0

Depending on your sister's income, she might be able to get Council Tax Benefit.0

if your mum is not working then your sister may be able to claim 2nd Adult rebate based on her income.it's not the council's fault your band is wrong, blame the Valuation Office !!!!! :rolleyes:0 -
Thanks for the replies. My sister is earning around £30k, is that too much to claim 2nd adult rebate?0

don't you get a 25% discount if you're the only person paying?0

It's not based on your sister's income but your mother's income and only if she is not paying your sister rent.
