    That's because there is no risk differential.

    I accept that different customers have different risk profiles but:

    1. Northern Rock are JOINTLY responsible (it was their mortgage product that led to the problem).

    2. Forcing people into bankruptcy does not help anyone.

    3. The Government should help all its citizens and that includes those who are neither rich (with savings in foreign banks - NDG take note) nor poor (on benefits of one kind or another).

  • The 'together' part of the loan is not secured, so can be split from the secured loan. Thus, if you can get a better deal, tell NR that you only want to pay the secured loan off. The unsecured part will continue, although the rate might go up even further, but it might be worth it.
