Self Assessment Returns - Paper and Online deadlines

Just a quick question. Been seeing the ads on the TV about self assessment returns - before 31 Oct if on paper and 31 Jan if online. My dad doesn't know about this. Normally, his returns are sent by 31 Jan and 31 July. If you don't watch TV, how is anyone supposed to know this?? How has it been communicated? Any help appreciated! Thanks.

Your dad would have paid his payments on account (POA) by 31st January and 31st July but he would have had to file his returns by either 30th September (for HMRC to calculate) or 31st January.
This year this has changed and full details are on the front of his tax return or any reminder notice sent to him. If he prefers to file on paper he has until 31st October otherwise he has to file online and has until 31st January to do so.This is a system account and does not represent a real person.
