Whats the BR code, is that a temporary code, yes he should get it back well i have if ive payed too much tax0 -
why is he on BR code?
didn't he give his P45 to his employer?
he needs to complete a P46 and give it to his employer and it will get sorted out.0 -

Was he given his P45 when he left the pub? If so did he hand it in? If he does not have a P45 he should fill in a P46. Once he does this HMRC will allocate him a proper tax code. BR means he is paying basic rate on all of his wages and getting no tax-free allowances. This code is usually given to someone who has no P45 and has not completed a P46.does he need to claim this back from work or should it automatically be adjusted?...
Once his proper code is allocated to him he will get an automatic refund if still within this tax year. So it's important to get the P45/P46 sorted out.what time scale might it be?
Depends on when he fills/hands in the appropriare form. Get him to ask at work.If he earns less than the personal allowance ...will he pay tax at all?? thank a lot.
He will pay no tax if he earns less than £6035 this tax year.0 -
I don't believe he should be paying tax. The BR code is the emergency tax code, charged at a higher rate than usual.
Go to the HMRC/Inland Revenue's website to get the phone number for his local office. Last time I claimed tax back they just asked to see my wage slips, then they sent me a cheque. It took three weeks. This link takes you to their contact page:

BR is not the emergency tax code - 603L is. BR is for someone who has a 2nd job or someone who has not handed in a P45 or filled in a P46.Go to the HMRC/Inland Revenue's website to get the phone number for his local office. Phoning HMRC will get him nowhere at all. They will simply advise him to get his P45 handed in or to fill out a P46. No refund will be issued at this stage of the tax year as it will be handled automatically when he gets his tax code sorted.0 -
Thanks to everybody....He left work and then returned within about 4 weeks...dont know if this is the problem ?0

BR is the emergency code- is a basic rate with no allowances, 603L is the current general rate for under 65's with the £6035 p/a tax free allowance
If there is no 45 or p46 this is what is put on as it is emergency tax
2nd jobs are not usually BR but a differenct code from 603L but a code none the lessjem16 wrote:Phoning HMRC will get him nowhere at all. I phones HMRC because I was through as BR on my job due to previous employer not providing me with a p45. Called the evening I found out about it, got my letter with my tax code adjustment within a week and they gave me a refund in my next wage slip- found them very helpful and efficient.
I only called them last month and got the excess tax refunded on last wages so it doesn't matter what stage of the tax year it is

Phoning HMRC will help if they actually have his details of his new job on record - this depends on how long he has been there. Getting his employer to submit a P46 will also help and is what should have happened in the first place if he did not have a P45.I only called them last month and got the excess tax refunded on last wages so it doesn't matter what stage of the tax year it is
I was replying to the fact that he would not get a refund by cheque - that only happens after the end of the tax year.
As I said an automatic refund will be issued as soon as the correct code is used which is what has happened in your case.0
