Air Purifier Essences - in the real world?

Options
I have an air purifier (one of the bubbly goldfish bowl types) and want to buy a new bottle of essence for it. Does anyone know of any shops that sell these? I know there are loads on Ebay, and I have bought from there before, but I'd like to be able to smell the essences before buying this time as I haven't found one I really like yet.

Alternatively, does anyone have a favourite essence that is pleasant but not overpowering and can cope with tobacco smells? I've got lemon at the moment and the whole house smells like it's been dipped in disinfectant. :(

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Found this on the net, hope it helps:-

Combat tobacco odours with 2-3 drops of Lemongrass, Patchouli or Lime essential oils.
I let my mind wander and it never came back!

How can it be an "Air Purifier" when it adds an "essence" (undoubtedly a chemical essence!) to the air ?
  • Thanks for the essential oil suggestion. However, other people have reported ruining their machines by adding pure essential oils. The essences you use in them are water soluble essential oils (not chemicals!).
  • Rosewater or orange water from your grocers?

'water soluble essential oils'? an oil is by definition not water soluble :P and an essential oil is just that... an essential oil. So I don't see how the 'special' ones are essential oils whereas 'normal' essential oils wreck the machine? All I can think is it's the strength of the oil that causes the problem - in which case it may be diluted with another 'carrier' (non-smelling) oil.
  • ahh. done a bit of hunting on ebay and they appear to be sold as 'essence oils' not 'essential oils'. clever ;)

do you have an old bottle? it should have ingredients listed.
  • Are essence oils any different to ones you put in an evaporator over a tea light? Or pot-pourri refresher oils? If they're the same, M&S have a good range.

Unfortunately the manufacturers are very clear about not using normal essential oils (and I have come across people on MSE who have trashed their machines by using them). PureAire, one of the machine manufacturers says this about water soluble essential oils (the "essences"):

"Water soluble essential oils are re-engineered to dissolve in water more effectively. They are non-flammable, alcohol-free and environmentally safe."

I'm no chemist, so have no idea how they do this, but do know that there is a big difference between standard essential oils and the ones you use in these machines. I use essential oils a lot in oil burners, baths, etc, and can see why they are not suitable. I have a good local place to get these from, but I've never seen the "essences" in any shops and was hoping someone could help with this.
