HSBC Gone mad!

Hello there,

This is my first post, so hopefully I make sense.

My wife and I (and 3 + 1 kids (we temporarily foster an extra one after he became an orphan)) are looking for any general, or specific, advice that might be available.

Following three bad job situations on the trot, we have spent nearly a year trying to re-engineer our finances with our incumbent bank HSBC; but to no avail. Each time we talked to them the computer said no! Until recently we had been managing to pay all our debts, but latterly this was at the expense of food for the family, heating from the home and petrol to get to work.

Finally, we got advice from CCCS and they were very helpful – thank you to them.

We produced a DMP and contacted every one of our creditors to explain what was happening and supplied copies of our income & expenditure, along with a copy of the recommended repayment schedule. We have also set up each one with a standing order for the recommended amount.

The CCCS worked out our surplus as £141/month.

We have just had a letter from HSBC, saying that £34/month is not enough and that we have to pay £179/month or they will proceed with taking steps to recover the debt. I rang them to make sure they’d got our letter. They said that their people had, and had worked out that we could afford £179! When I pointed out that CCCS had worked out that we could only afford £141 in total and they were asking for more than that, they just said they would have proceed with taking action. What planet are they on!

Are we going mad?
What is the next step, now that they have rejected our offer?
What is the best way of telling them to leave us alone for a while to get back to having food on the table?

Any advice greatly received.

Thanks

  • bumping this back up for the experienced members to look at but i think the general plan is nicely inform them that all communication is via cccs. if you can ignore the phone or get a caller display/answering machine to take note of who is calling you.

I am in a similar boat with HSBC. They refuse to accept DMP offer, they refuse to deal with CCCS, they refuse to take further action to pass it to a DMC. Basically I get the feeling that they just want to hike the debt up as high as possible with interest & charges, they claim my loan S/O from my current account and bounce it each month (charging me £25) as they refuse to cancel the S/O!

As I understand from talking to CCCS this is pretty standard bullying behaviour for HSBC as they want to squeeze as much out of you with no regard of what you need to live on! Just continue with the payments via CCCS irrespective of if they accept it or not. I think the rational behind doing this is should it get escalated somehow down the line it is all in black and white that you have made payments that you can afford to them each month and ultimately in my mind they will end up looking the unreasonable ones :)
