Horse racing: Local residents can enjoy the first day of this year's Hennessy Winter Festival at Newbury for free
PEOPLE living close to Newbury Racecourse can get free tickets to enjoy this year’s Hennessy Winter Festival.
This year the iconic event of the winter season at Newbury begins on a Thursday and to celebrate all locals are being offered the chance to attend the first day free.
Anyone with an RG14 postcode can apply for the free tickets before November 20.
The Hennessy Winter Festival will take place from Thursday, November 27 until Saturday, November 29.
Managing director of the racecourse, Steven Higgins, said: “It’s great to be able to offer the local area the opportunity to experience the introduction of the Thursday to the Winter Festival for free.
“It’s going to be an action packed few days with plenty of added entertainment alongside some top quality action on the course.”
As well as the racing visitors will have an opportunity to explore the Hennessy Shopping Village and Food and Drink Zone, sampling some of the foods and taking part in cookery demonstrations.
John Campbell, executive chef at the Vineyard at Stockcross has also designed a bespoke menu that he will be cooking for racegoers in the Hennessy Restaurant over the three days.
Friday will see the racecourse play host to Newbury’s first ever Gentleman’s Day.
Top jockey Sam Thomas, who rode Denman to victory in last year’s Hennessy Gold Cup, is the ‘Official Face of Festival’ and will be judging the Best Dressed Male competition, with prizes up for grabs.
Saturday sees the 52nd running of the prestigious Hennessy Gold Cup.
First run in 1957 the race is now competed over a distance of three miles and two and a half furlongs and the prize money for the winner has increased from the original £5,272 to £175,000.
A parade of past winners will take place before the runners and riders set off over the 21 fences.
