A question for a friend who has just split from her partner she has just had a baby this summer, she works full time and has a mortgage in her name.
her partner was living with her and they took out 2 loans one for £16k and one for £5k which they both spent, the £5k one was in joint names and the other just in her name.
He has now left and is refusing to help with any of the loan payments he is also out of work. what can my friend do? can she only pay her half of the repayments or is she stuck with all the debt on her own with a new baby?
any help would be appreciated thanks xx

As the £16K loan was in her name only, she is stuck with that. The other was joint which means that they are both jointly liable for the whole of it, unfortunately if her ex is now out of work or has disappeared, the lenders are quite likely to chase her for the whole debt. She can't just pay 'her' half.

Was she expecting to pay back the loan when she took it out?

Why would her partner have to pay a £16K loan that was taken out in the friends name? The person who signed the loan agreement (the friend) will be liable, NOT her partner.

Of course she was expecting to pay it back!
However they were together then with 2 salaries coming in and now he has left her to pay it all back alone, she has a very small baby and is worried sick so i said i would ask advice as i knew people on here would know!

Thanks for the other replies it looks like she will have to pay it if she wants to keep her credit clean and a roof over their heads.

Getting another loan is not likely to help someone who is struggling with 2 already!
