The Dept of Works and Pensions are requiring me to furnish them with my birth certificate. They say it must be original and wont accept a copy! I was born outside the UK. There is no prospect of being able to obtain a replacement. I do have an original, which I am reluctant to part with, in case it is lost in the post. What is a way out of this? They have been quite happy yo collect NI contributions since 1962! but are now creating difficulties when it is time to pay the pension.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Take it to a solicitor and get a "certified copy" to send off.Cost you about a fiver.Alternatively a similar copy of your passport will usually do.Trying to keep it simple...0 -
You could try asking them if you can have it verified at a government office near you so that you do not have to send it anywhere.0

You can take the original to your nearest JobCentrePlus who will photocopy it and stamp the copy as certified.0

Some dates of birth held on the National Insurance Recording System are not verified, which means that you need to prove your date of birth to satisfy the secretary of state that you have reached State Pension age.
As suggested, your local jobcentreplus office will take a copy of the original and send it on internally to the office that deals with your pension claim.0
