P45 - Starting a new ob without it.

I am starting my new job tomorow and they have all my documentation apart from my p45.

I really do not want to go on to the BR tax code for my first pay pack so I am thinking that I should fill a P46. What I am wondering is wheter the p46 will get my tax code sorted in time for correct payment this month as I already have a tax code so it would simply be a case of informing the payroll people what it is.

Any ideas?

If you do not hand in a P45 then you should be given a P46 to complete. What code is then used for you will depend on which box you select on the P46.
    From the P46................
    Your present circumstances
Read all the following statements carefully and enter 'X'
in the one box that applies to you.
A – This is my first job since last 6 April and
I have not been receiving taxable Jobseeker's
    Allowance or taxable Incapacity Benefit
or a state or occupational pension.
    OR
B – This is now my only job, but since last 6 April
I have had another job, or have received
    taxable Jobseeker's Allowance or Incapacity
Benefit. I do not receive a state or
    occupational pension.
    OR
C – I have another job or receive a state or
    occupational pension.
If you mark A you will be put on 603L cumulative B you will be put on 603L week1/month1 C you will be put on BR, if you do not fill in the P46 you will be put on BR.
This will then be sent to the tax office who will send any change required to your employer, this may take some time though.
You cannot give your employer your tax code, on its own it is meaningless, it needs details of your previous pay and tax to go with it, that is the purpose of the P45.
Why can you not give your P45 to your employer? If it is because you have not received it yet just complete the P46 and hand in the P45 when you get it.

    Thanks for this information.

I am still waiting for my p45 so will not be able to hand that in for this pay cheque.

I will ask about the p46 and see if it is really worth it as I wonder if i will get the tax code sorted before the pay cut off so think a Basic Rate tax may be taken anyway.

How long does it normally take for a rebate if it does go at BR?

The "rebate" will appear (as your correct cumulative tax) in your first pay packet once they have the correct code from the P45.

I don't think you get a choice about the P46, your work should always do a P46 automatically before they pay you.

you will get less tax taken off with it than at BR so better for you in any case.

Ok, the big man at work has told me that if I can get my p45 to him before the 28th then he can make sure I do not go onto BR. He will get me to do the P46 if I have not got a p45 by this date as he said it will take the tax office a long time to process the p46 hence its better to wait a little longer first.
