How many got out of Property...and into Shares ;-(

  • By May, the OP had shifted to the new bull paradigm (sp? looks wrong), saying that people who think house prices are going to fall are wishing recession and depression, and it's all the bears' fault:

    Well bully for you ;-)

I don't know what you do for a living but I hope you realise the full implications of a "crash" on society as a whole.

Also in May, the OP becomes a comrade:

Thank god we have a tory government in waiting. All those Eton boys will really know how to help out the less well off. Experience being a great help when dealing with the problems of poverty, I just can't wait till the new blood gets in there and teaches us what they did at Eton and Harrow when times were hard. ;-)

And after that, oddly enough, has had little to say.....
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

LOL, all true, but as I said I am not going to Cheer for Celtic when I support HEARTS.

I am still happy to have the property I have. Renting them is easier than ever. Owning a home is now harder than it has ever been. Many who hoped to own when prices dropped never will.
The trouble with a lot of the HPC crowd is your only focus was on house prices and not the chaos that would follow when it happened.
I have just this minute spoken to my Mortgage advisor and he was telling me of the problems he has getting Residential mortgages for ANYONE.
Fair enough some of you may well be in a strong position but for how long? How safe is your job now? How safe are your investments?
Times are hard and I take no pleasure from the suffering of others. I hope you all get what you desire. As this goes on I'm quite sure we will find that it's the same as it's ever been. The rich will get richer and the working man will be left to foot the bill.
    Good luck to you all.

Oh and as for the last quote from Thedesparategirl. This is not a problem created by Labour. This problem was created by Public School boy bankers, very likely all tories.

The problem was allowed to escalate by the government.

So in answer to the OP's question:

No sensible STRs have invested the bulk of their house sale proceeds in shares, and are instead earning interest on the cash/bonds that they now hold. Meanwhile house prices continue to slide.

Don't get me wrong, I still maintain that STRing is a risky game...
    Hello.

Fair enough. Brown's only been PM or Chancellor for 11 years, couldn't have done anything about it all.

This is a WORLD WIDE recession. No government could stop it. The cause was simple, greed. The banks caused it and the tax payer is left to bail them out. The banks in this country are in the most part, in the higher echelons, populated by over confident public school boys. These or people like them are the people who will be leading our country on from this recession. These people will also sadly rise again in some guise or other. While the poor will be left to pay the costs.
    God help us all.

I seriously mean this. I hope you all do well and get your houses eventually. I also hope not to many suffer from the ensuing storm. This downturn will effect us all in one way or another.

I hope you never have a reason to despair girl ;-) Good luck to you.

    PS

I'll come back in 10 Years when the housing boom starts again ;-)

No government could stop a recession following on from an unsustainable boom. But each and every government could most certainly have ensured that an unsustainable boom did not happen.

And as for your assertion that nobody can get a mortgage anymore, well you do realise that that will only make prices fall further. As some people do have to sell and will only be able to do so to cash buyers. And there are less potential cash buyers than potential forced sellers.

I'd have loved to buy/sell some shares. I thought about £2k's worth. But, to be honest, I've not worked out how to buy/sell them myself so never got round to it.

I was offered the chance to buy one of those shares ISA thingies in March, but I didn't want them to be choosing which sharesand I don't really have the spare money to be in it for the long-term for thousands.

I just fancied a bit of fun with about £2k, seeing if I could make a few bob. Sort of a hobby.

Money and hobby...Those words do not sit nicely together.

It's probably cheaper than taking up skiing or sky-diving. And you're less likely to break a leg.;)
