Sunderlandblackcat: My car is petrol but as it worth so little and I have to do an hour round trip to work every day don't think I'd get a reliable diesel for the same price

Ah, thats a pity. If it was a diesel you might been able to have substituted it for vegetable oil to save a bit of money.0 -

Wow! Didn't know you could susbstitute diesel for veg oil - that must work out loads cheaper. Do you have to have the car modified

I just rang to register for the Busy Bees vouchers, but because I get the childcare element of tax credits, it works out that I would be worse off with the vouchers as they would take away part of my tax credits

It's a load cheaper especially if it can be bulk bought. The original diesel engine was designed to run on peanut oil so it's not too much of a leap
Compatibilty depends on the car, some cars will run on pure veg oil without modification, some need up to 20% diesel mixed in but some cars need a different model of fuel pump fitted or other minor mods.
You're supposed to keep a log of your mileage if you're running on biodiesels & if you go over a certain mileage limit you're supposed to pay duty on the excess but for people who just use the car around town or shortish commute to work they'd probably stay inside the limit.
The exhaust fumes smell quite strongly like a chip shop though so people doing it are quite easy to spot.0
