Choose the AMD Flex/Sempron base unit @ £195 for AMD 1.6Ghz and 256MB RAM.

Put your own o/s on it (buy xp CD off Ebay and just "boot to CD").

Re-use your old monitor, or also buy from Refresh for £149+VAT. Nothing less than 17".

There's cheap and there's cheap.  Could you give us some more info?

Do you already have a screen/keyboard etc? that you could use?

Does it need to have an operating system?

How about an office suite (there are a few 'free' ones that are MS compatible.

Do you need a printer in with the deal?

And finally, what is the main use you'll put it to - it's no use expecting to run th latest games software on a £200 machine, no matter how new it is.

    Regards - Benji

A deal comprising a basic Dell desktop with a 17" CRT monitor and 160 gig hard drive for £175.08 has been posted here.

CRT power consumption is MUCH higher than an LCD.

Secondly, when you use it, you immerse your head in an electromagnetic field.

    [Cue Twilight Zone music].

No seriously, prolonged exposure to these fields is not good, especially for children. Cases in point would be mobile phones and transmitters.

There is no EMG field with LCD.

There are fewer parts in an LCD monitor (to go wrong).

It makes no noise, while a high-pitched hum emanates from CRT monitors.

And lastly, LCD provides perfect, flat haze-free viewing. You can even see the corners of the pixels. A different experience.
