Reclaim Council Tax for no bin collection

Hi,

This is my first post on here and its regarding missed bin collections and getting reimbursed for it.

I have been advised that I can claim 47 pence back from Bolton council for each missed bin collection.

I know its a small insignificant amount but if everyone claimed it back they may think twice about improving the service and stop missing collections.

I have made the claim via an email so the only cost incurred to me is time spent writing the email. I have claimed for 3 weeks missed at £1.41.

I'm now awaiting a response from the council.

Cheers

Steve

  • That's quite interesting that you can do this actually. It will probably be a lot more inconvenient/costly for them to arrange refunds/payments (if more people start doing this) then to improve their service.

Never have the problem myself but my mum often has this problem with her glass bin not being emptied. It would be horrible not to have your general waste bin emptied everytime though.

Can I ask where this advice came from, as I'm sure a lot of people would be on to their council for a refund.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales

Its not in council tax legislation so its most likely some sort of local scheme.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • Council Tax in Scotland dont work like this. As Council Tax covers several different areas within the are eg The Fire Services, Police, Education they don't provide a reduction for not receiving the services, it would be up to the individual to take up there problem with the department concerned.

council tax is a tax not a commercial payment. Thats like me asking Gordon Brown for an income tax repayment everytime he ****s up!

Its a local scheme, please don't think there's any kind of reimbursement available to the rest of you all unless your council actually advertise the service...
it's not the council's fault your band is wrong, blame the Valuation Office !!!!!

I like this idea a lot...

I want 87p for the street light at the end of my road not working, £350 for the time they closed the school for a couple of days when I was 7 and £6.56 for the customer service being generally inefficient when I last went in there. ;)

The advice came from the council telephone advisor. She was very rude which is standard practice for Bolton council Telephone workers.

I got an apology from the Head of Environmental services. Not received a cheque yet.
