Have you got online banking? We cancelled our DDs on there and set them up on our new account. Standing orders give you control over who what and when you pay! Negotiate the dates they want your money! Online banking is great for managing your money!:j

I get DLA for mental health problems, it's perfectly possible to do so.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

You can get Incapacity Benefit for being mentally ill, I did. Though technically mine was paid as income support! I was always told by the dss to class myself as disabled, but while I wasn't working I never 'got round' to claiming DLA. I know I should've done. :( You willl never know if your wife is eligable unless you claim for it! here are some telephone numbers that might be of use - Benefit Enquiry Line 0800 88 22 00, DLA and Attendance Allowance 0845 7 12 34 56, Carer's Allowance 01253 85 61 23

As regards standing orders and direct debits, just cancel your dd's, and log in to online banking (or you can do it over the phone too, or in branch of course!) - click on 'payments and transfers' and all should become clearer. If it is easier for you, I would take details of who you need to pay into the bank. And if companies moan that you are going to miss a payment while you are setting all this up - 'please accept this token payment of £1 / £10 while we set up a regular payment through our bank' ;)
