Who owns the debt ?

How do I find out who owns a debt. I had a loan with Lloyds Tsb (2004) which I couldn't keep up the payments. Since then I have had an SD from
Connaught Collections which indicates the debt has been assigned to 1st credit. I'm also getting lots of letters from Lowell Finance threatening court action etc.
The strange thing is the amount of debt mentioned on the in the SD is much lower then the amount mentioned in Lowell's letters.
Any help would be appreciated,

You should write to each of the companies, including the original creditor, to request a notice of assignment as it is unclear who you should be making payment to. List all the companies that are requesting you pay them for the same debt and ask that they send details to clarify this as having more than one debt collection agency at a time is in breach of the Office of Fair Trading Debt Collection Guidelines [2.6 (c)].After falling off the gambling wagon (twice): £33,600 (24,000+ 9,600) - Original CC Debt: £7,885.91
