Overpayments - Towards Capital or Interest?

I've recently started making overpayments on my mortgage and it occurred to me last night that I might just be paying off interest. Do I have to ask my mortgage company (Northern Rock *spits*) to put the overpayments towards capital or is this automatic and I am worrying about nothing?
Thanks for your help.

Just to be on the safe side I would call them and make sure they are putting it to the capital, some to automatically some don't and put it where they feel like.0
