a debt of old

ok so what do i.
About 6 years ago i got into some debt but left the country . I returned after a couple of years with a guilty conscience and prepared to pay the debt off. I made arrangements to pay off about £2000 the full debt amount but again about two years ago i stopped making payments moved address's and the debt recovery company have never caught up with me. How ever a letter has arrived at an old address stating they will start a statuary demand for bankruptcy within 21 days.
Can they do this with out me knowing about it ?
what is my best course of action? would they be likely to take a lower settlement figure to clear the debt

any advice is welcome or thoughts

many thanks
