It seems that we are standing on the brink of - of what?
The Stockmarket crash MUST have an effect on everyday life. The banking crisis is already affecting loans, overdrafts and credit cards, but it is mostly anecdotal evidence we have for that.
We are not hearing about defaults on debts and mortgages as the crisis is taking up the media - but it must be happening.
Jobs are going - workers on short weeks - unemployment said to be 2 million by Christmas. That must be the start.
And yet, when I go out everything seems normal. I know I have become obsessed, and it amazes me that so many people seem to have no idea of what is going on.
I feel as though I'm trapped on a roller coaster - it has to stop sometime but where or when is shrouded in mystery.
When I heard so many people had written to the Beeb to say the media was 'talking' us into the crisis I laughed out loud!
What does anyone else think?

None of this can come as a surprise... surely? The signs have been there for a while!
It's just part of the cycle.0 -
I dont know either moany. I keep thinking the sky will fall in, cars will be lined up empty of petrol and abandoned in the streets, feral gangs looting shops. But, life goes on.0

moany, you've pretty much summed up how I feel. The difference I suppose is that DH's work is so influenced by it all that we feel like we are in a little boat on a big ocean. I know that while he feels very safe at work the way the work is..er, working...is totally different to what he's grown used to in the last couple of years, with lots of false starts and preparation for dozens of different outcomes. He's also spending a lot of time in 'education' rather than working- global lectures, Europe wide lectures, office lectures, interfirm presentations etc etc etc. He hasn't travelled out of UK for a while now, he has three current visas that were likely to be heavily used in his current seat that haven't been needed at all- this might change. His employers are doing a lot to remind staff they are very safe, but the feeling in the City drifts in through doors and windows and more tangibly in the nature or considerations of the work they do. So life for us feel close to the drama, and I struggle to remember that not every one feels so directly involved as DH or as avid a follower as I.0

We had our first cancellation of a building job yesterday - chap had been made redundant. Im wondering if this is going to become more frequent in the next year.0

There has been a wave of redundancies at the company I'm contracting at. I feel like I'm in the front line of things at the mo.
I was chatting to some 'survivors' in the kitchen just before, and likened what's happening in the economy to the Titanic crashing. At first most people were mildly (if at all) interested and a few people larked about on the deck, throwing ice from the berg at each other.
I told them to really panic when a band starts playing 'Nearer my god to thee'.Mortgage Free in 3 Years (Apr 2007 / Currently / Δ Difference)
