Prolapsed Disc any advice?

I have recently had an MRI Scan which showed a prolapsed disc L5 S1 and am being refered to a Surgeon. My physiotherapist has said I will probably be offered an operation, or maybe injections into the disc first. Has anyone had either of these treatments and how effective were they?
