7 year old Credit Card debt collection

I have today received a debt collection letter chasing £1500 odd credit card debt. The card was taken out in 2001 and last had activity on it in 2002. I have requested the application as it is possible my ex husband has either asked me to sign this or requested I filled it in when I was younger as I was not aware I had a card with this company.
Is there any max period of time with no activity on a card and no correspondance before the debt is cleared or is there anything I can do to get rid of this.

I also believe its 6 years, I was reading a post about uncollected debt on here the other day and that figure has stuck in my head.
Hold fire in terms of talking to the collector and seek some advice as you could potentially restart the 6 year process again if you are not careful.
I will try and find the other thread for you, but I am sure that someone who knows more will be along soon.

i have a car finance debt recently took legal advise and if you have not made any payment for the past 6 years and it's not a ccj you don't have to pay it. it's one day after the date of default and you don't have to pay so if its 20th september 2002 you had a default its one day and 6 years you can ask for it to be dis-barred (i think thats what its called) but get your own legal advice as this is just for me0

It's 6 years from the last communication, not from the debt.

Agree. Your big mistake was asking for the application...the 6 years start from then I'm afraid0 -

From the link you quoted from me:You have established any contact with the creditor (this can be a phone call or letter to request a balance or change your details), except to deny that the debt exists.
And from the OP:I have requested the application as it is possible my ex husband has either asked me to sign this or requested I filled it in when I was younger as I was not aware I had a card with this company.
It could be argued that asking for confirmation of the debt is denying it exists. Tenuous I know, but...Conjugating the verb 'to be":

Hmmm....maybe...but she hasn't sent a letter stating she is denying the debt is she?
She has probably sent a letter saying she knows nothing about it but in the same breath asking for the application form. There is certain wording that has to be stated to ascertain that you are not acknowledging the debt and the corre is denying it and any further corre issued to the address. Asking for an application form could be seen as acknowledging it.
I agree tenuous....she should could to a Advice shop and speak to an advisor who specifially deals with these matters. Having been in a similar situation a few years back, I was advised NOT to contact them under any circumstances - not even to dent or query the debt.0 -
You have to be careful as it might be that this agency have stumbled on you by accident - i.e. you might have the same name as a person they are looking for in your town.
By opening a dialogue with them they will get interested in you and may badger you for a debt that isn't yours.
I remember reading that if you DO write to these people don't sign the letter as your signature may end up being used by them.0
