Thanks again everyone, very valuable, comprehensive information. Very much appreciated.
Because my income (from state pension and savings interest) takes me over my annual PA, I hadn't realised that I could claim back tax paid on interest up to the threshold figure.
I think I can download a tax rebate form from the internet and send this to the tax office. It looks like I'm going to be busy :T

The form you need is the R40 - http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/forms/r40.pdf
and since you have no PAYE income source you should send it to
