How bad is a satisfied deault?

I've got a satisfied default 407pound on my credit file; how bad is this viewed when applying for credit? Banks, Loans, Mobile etc? It's the only bad thing that experian is showing and is from 2005; I've read somewhere that there are letter's that you can send that can sometimes help with getting these removed? Any success stories from here?
