mortgage debt

Hi
I have recieved a letter saying that i owe £38,000 approx.
My ex-wife and i had a joint mortgage and when we divorced 18 years ago she had custody of my three children and lived in the former marital home.
Due to circumstances i eventually got custody of the three children (legally) but during the six months that this took, the children lived with me and therefore i was told legally not to pay my ex-wife anymore money and no contact was allowed between myself and the children and my ex-wife.
Once custody was given to me legally the Judge ordered that the property be sold immediately and any profits split between myself and my ex.
Unfortunately my ex had not payed any mortgage during the 6 month legal battle and our property was re-possesed.
Now a debt recovery agency is demanding a settlement of this debt. This is the first contact i have had in regards to this matter in 18 years.
WHERE DO I STAND?
Look forward to hearing from you

Don't acknowledge that you owe anything. If they haven't made any effort to chase the debt for over 12 years, then legally you don't owe them a penny, unless you let them scare you into admitting you owe the money. See:
