Tax return query for 2007/2008

Hi
I came to uk in Feb-2008 from NZ and started working since 3-march as full time employee.. My company paid my salary on 30-04-2008, 6666 before tax and 4576 after tax including NI deduction for two months.

If I break it down then for march 2008 for which they charged me tax, even though I was on Emergency Tax code at that time due to not having NI, which I got in April and provided them..So my next salary comes with correct tax code. should I claim it back as tax return?

What I should do, I tried to did it online via SA return, but it asks me the UTR? any idea where to get it?

Any help to get this sorted highley appreciated.

Many Thanks

You dont break down the payment for March. In the UK you are taxed on what you actually receive in the year, not what you have earned.
The 6666 therefore all relates to this tax year and it looks from your question as if you are now on the correct tax code and your employer has made your refund. if I have misunderstood, pelase clarify.

  • Many Thanks for your quick response.
If I started work in march 2008, I will fall under 2007/2008 financial year. and for me that will be the whole year salary? so under 6000 is except from tax for any financial year?

I am on correct tax code, but employeer doesn't refund me at all the tax I paid for the month of March (2007/2008)

Sorry I never done that tax documentation before so please ignore my lck of understanding.

Should I call it Tax rebate?

    Thanks

Ok, so it looks as if you were actually paid at the end of March?
If so, you need to write to your tax office and ask for a refund. have you completed a form P86? If not, download one from www.hmrc.gov.uk, fill it in and send it with your letter. No self assessment to fill in - just a simple letter and form P86.

  • Many Many Thanks for this.
  • It would be worth calling your tax office first (tel number should be on your payslip - they should be open until 8pm) to ask them if they have your P60 details for 07/08 (P60 = document received in May 08 off your employer telling you how much tax you have paid in the year).

If they havent and you send in the P86, the tax office may delay you claim by 6/8 weeks (you will get a letter from your tax office asking for the original P60).

If your 07/08 P60 details have not been updated yet then you will need to send in your original P60 with the P86 and covering letter.

Just a quick question rikleo.. have you filled in form P86? If not you'll need to complete on no matter if the tax office have your P60 details or not.
By filling the form in you advise the tax office of your intentions about being here in the uk i.e. how long you plan to stay etc.

Hi, I hope this makes sense and just by way of background.
Going back more years than I care to admit it has been traditional in the UK for weekly paid workers to be paid “a week in hand”.
Start a job on Monday and your first payday will be the Friday of the following week and so on.
Traditionally monthly paid staff are paid on a current basis. Start a job on the first of the month and your first payday will be the last day of the month.
Recently there was a post on this board where someone was being paid “a month in hand“. Start a job in March and your first payday will be the last day in April where you will be paid what you earned in March. At the end of May you will be paid what you earned in April and so on.
Now, the key question for you is when were you actually paid for what you earned in March?
If you were paid at the end of April then despite the fact that you earned the money in March it is taxable as part of your 2008/09 earnings.
It’s not for me to pry into your annual salary but I get the feeling that you may have been paid your March and April salary in one lump at the end of April.
If so, I am afraid that you cannot split the April payment between March and April. It is all paid in April and taxable in 2008/09.
If you weren’t actually paid in March then I am afraid you have lost out.
    Sorry.
