Tax Code Question

Hi All,
I was a director of a limited company that ceased to trade a few years ago (employed by that company on a sslary so I can get a p45). Since then I have been unemployed but have a got a new job starting next week (woo hoo!).
My question is, do I have to go anywhere to get a new tax code? Following on form that, when I get a tax code will my new employer know that I have been out of work?

Your P45 from years ago will be of no use to you. Have you been claiming JSA? If so, the Job Centre will give you a P45. If not, ask your new employer for a form P46. Sign this to say this is your only or main job. This will put you on E code (603L week 1) and you can then contact HMRC to tell them what you have been doing since your last job and they can issue a cumulative code number to your employer.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

If you are filling in a P46 and have not worked, recieved any taxable benefit, or recieved any pension, then you can select box A and you will then be put on the 603L cumulative tax code.
Box A on P46
A– This is my first job since last 6 April andI have notbeen receiving taxable Jobseeker's
Allowance or taxable Incapacity Benefitor a state or occupational pension.0 -
Your employers personnel dept will know that you have been out of work.
If you had been in work since April 2008 (the start of the current tax year) then the employer you were leaving would give you a P45 to hand into your new employer, since you will not have this P45, you personnel dept will know that you have not worked since Apr 2008.0 -
Sorry Mi_bargains, but the new employer should never assume that someone has not worked in the current tax year just because they haven't handed in a P45, the P46 needs to be completed and signed. Box A for first job and no taxable state benefits, Box B for previous jobs or benefits or Box C for other jobs or pensions.0
