How good is hand washing and spin drying compared to an automatic machine?

For various reasons, namely I'm a student in ancient halls of residence, I don't have a washing machine and can't get one. The laundrette is expensive and often has a long waiting line.

We do have a large room to hang clothes in, which also has a sink with hot water. I'm wondering how practical it would be to wash clothes in the sink and put them through a spin dryer before hanging them to fully dry. The main thing stopping me from hand washing at the moment is that everything would be so wet and take ages to dry, which would waste time and probably result in musty clothes. I suspect a spin dryer would solve this issue, but I'd be really glad to hear from someone who owns one first?

Anyway, if I hand washed and spin dried before hanging, would the clothes be as clean and dry as from an automatic washing machine?

Washing machines much better more for stained or heavily soiled. Everything else fine hand washed, I think. Spin driers brilliant - better at spinning than most automatics. And if you have a warmish room to hang the damp clothes - ideal.

You might need to soak some things and do a bit of scrubbing but it'd be much cheaper than the launderette and very cost effective.
