Lapquilts

I've seen mention somewhere on M.S.E. of lapquilts - I seem to recall that someone had made one from an old duvet.
Googling away - and come up with the information that Americans seem to make them - size 42" x 42" - and with the idea of passing them on to cancer patients. Hmmm..
Right - well I have 2 old doublesize duvets and thought maybe I could get someone (ie not me - as I'm cackhanded with sewing - but I know a woman or two who can) to cut one of them in half and then make a cover for it from one of my old sheets - and it would be just like a half-size duvet - and useful for being a quilt to cover my bottom half when sitting down.
Anyone got any instructions/useful links/whatever for me please on this?

You could try just folding a duvet in half and then stuffing it in a single duvet cover to see how you get on with the length and width of the thing before cutting stuff up and sewing."This site is addictive!"

Thanks for the thought. They are pretty thick quilts - feather ones both of them - and I dont have any single duvet covers. Think I'll stick to the idea of cutting one up anyways - as I only want a single thickness of. Part of the reason for thinking about this is that I've sometimes dragged one of my quilts downstairs to wrap round myself - and they aint that easy to manoeuvre - with the size and weight of them. I'm only little for throwing that there amount of weight around;)0
