  • Hi there,

I am currently in exactly the same situation as you as i have returned to university this september after working full time and currently have about 6k of debt. What debts do you have eg are they credit card, loans from bank, loans from friends/family?

    Are you living at home?

Can you look at getting a bar/glass collecting job as these usually have a high turnover of staff and normal pay weekly.

In the mean time can you look into selling your unwanted bits and pieces on Amazon & Ebay and join up to the Mystery Shopping sites?

Have you got your student loans/grants? Most of us don't seem to class these as debts!

What about a student bank account with an overdraft facility? I know this is more debt but they give you ages to pay them off after you have finished your course.

    Otherwise its a part-time job, I'm afraid

Now you are no longer working, can you not apply for the ALG (Adult Learner Grant) which is the grown up alternative to the Educational MAintenance Allowance or do you not qualify for any state benefits?

Always worth asking even if the answer is no.

Make sure you've got all the grants and bursaries you're entitled to. You college should have a student support officer who can help you with this. Also make sure you get a student account if you need to have an overdraft - the rates are a lot lower. Or even better, a basic account with no overdraft so you can't run up an overdraft.

A part time job will also help - something ridiculous like over 80% of students (I'm not entirely sure of the figure so don't quote me! It is high though!) have to take on part time work - just make sure it allows you enough time to study and won't impact on any grants/bursaries.
