gemmzie - if it's an external drive you're having problems with, first off I'd uninstall it, delete any drivers and reinstall fresh. Is it the type that needs extensive drivers or it it a plug and play -type ?? From your event viewer entry, it sounds like it could be just a glitch, as it only gave a warning...however, I'd still look at uninstalling and reinstalling. Have you actually lost any data from it? Sounds like it's fixable, especially as you're still able to access it...oh, and is it a USB connection ?? if so, are all your other USB devices still ok, or are you having any problems with them ?? Did you plug/unplug any other USBs whilst the external drive was accessing/writing data ??

Sorry if I'm rambling, just trying to get a better picture of what's going on...

Yeah it's an external on a USB. Yeah other external is fine, internal hard-drive is brand new and I only installed Windows about a week ago so all fine there too.
There's a heck of a lot of data on it, which I usually have in three places (this pc, laptop and the external) but this pc died (hence the above), laptop has been cleared for fixing (fan issues) so yeah I'm a bit stuck!
Nope to the last question, I was watching a video file from it when it went wrong

gemz, do you KNOW all the files on the drive are clean ?? i.e. no nasties/malware lurking on there ?? MAy be an idea to scan the external if you can still access it before the uninstall/reinstall....

also, daft question, but is windows fully up-to-date after the re-install ??...

    I'm still thinking it's just a minor glitch....so far :D

Not 100% for sure, I can't access it to scan as it doesn't have a letter assigned to it

Up to date but without SP3 as it caused problems on my dad's pc so I've left it for now

I don't have a spare cable, unless the one from the other hard-drive fits it. Will check in the morning

    Thanks for your help!

just wondered if any of your security suite recognised it rather than relying just on windows...

deffo use sp3.....there were some early issues with downloading and installing, but should be fine now...

hope it works out...if not, maybe best to start a thread on the techie board for it....there are much cleverer boffins out there than me, but I do try :)
