Finally paying off mortgage

Hi, Can anyone advise me please. My sister told me today that she has paid off her 25 year mortgate (lucky devil) but never having been in this position she doesn't know what is supposed to happen. (I didn't know either but I told her I new a great site where they would know the answer.
Q. Once she's made her final payment is it usual for her to have to make another payment to finish it (over and above the mortgage). She's being told that she has still to pay over £250 because the mortgage has finished. Does this sound right? She had already asked them for a final figure and was given that but now they want more. She hasn't had any information to say that the mortgage was ending or ended. It's with Abbey National.
Also, What happens next? Should she then get her deeds back from somewhere?

Hi,
I have an endowment policy which was supposed to have been to cover a mortgage for £100k. plus bonuses and terminal bonus (originally with Royal Sun Alliance) now with Phoenix.which matures in 2013. Last time I heard, to cash in it would be around £50k my monthly repayments for this are £132.16.
I have a mortgage over 15years of £118k. What should I do? What would you do?
Should I cash it in and pay it off my mortgage or wait the remaining 4 years and hope I get a terminal bonus too?
Also, I hear that you can auction endowments and realise more than the cash in value. Does anyone know about these?
