  • Just a quick note, i was thinking about building myself a pretty high spec pc and as part of that was researching monitors, well it turns out widescreen monitors are not good for gaming and very few games work properly on widescreen, some just stretch the game (so something that was round is now oval) or i believe you can get back to normal ratio by having black borders at the ends however personally that would ruin it for me!.

Still not sure what to do, will do some more thinking i guess!

Has anyone got the Acer or Viewsonic monitor yet? Are they any good?

I'm considering buying one, but some feedback would be very useful first.
I'll be using it for audio editing, Office applications and browsing the web mostly. I do a little graphic design and virtually no gaming, but a good clear image is still essential.
Any suggestions as to which one to get would be much appreciated.

Oh, and I'd rather it didn't come with built in speakers - I'm very fussy when it comes to sound quality, and I already have a 5.1 surround sound setup :)

    Thanks,
    Tom

Does anyone know the difference between the Acer AL1916W and the AL1916WS?
I assume it's got something to do with built-in speakers, but I just wanted to make sure they weren't different latency times or something like that.

Also, has anyone found them cheaper than c.£175 inc. VAT (Amazon, eBuyer or Misco)?

    Thanks,
    Tom

But that one has a resolution of 1280x1024 as opposed to Acer's and ViewSonic's 1440x900 (widescreen).

The ViewSonic is exactly the same spec as the Acer, except it has DVI and built-in speakers. The Acer sold on Amazon, Ebuyer and Novatech is analogue VGA only and no speakers (but much slimmer bezel, nicer design).

I have tried both the Acer and ViewSonic and must say that both screens are excellent although have decided to return the Acer back to Amazon. The DVI connection on the ViewSonic makes a complete difference when connected to my Mac Mini although I much prefer Acer's minimalist design. Built-in speakers are always blegh so I don't care much for that.

    Hope this helps. :o

    Thanks for your replies.
What I'm really interested in is the difference between the Acer AL1916W and the Acer AL1916WS.
The only difference I can see from comparing the data from Amazon and eBuyer (1916Ws & 1916W respectively) is that the 1916Ws has a brightness of 300cd/m2 and viewing angles of 150°(H) x 130°(V) compared with 350cd/m2 and 170°(H) x 170°(V) of the 1916W.
Is this likely to make a difference for general use? I'll be using it for surfing the net, audio editing (the main reason I'm buying a bigger monitor), Office applications, some graphics applications (Photoshop & CorelDraw) and gaming very occasionally. I might also watch the odd DVD.

  • Got mine from here :

    http://www.savastore.com/productinfo/product.aspx?catalog_name=Savastore&product_id=10285044&pid=206&rstrat=3240

I only paid £168-ish a couple of days ago, now up to £173.12 plus del.

Fantastic monitor, no missing pixels, 3yr warranty, excellent build quality!

If you'd have gone through this Quidco link you could have got 3% off and got it for £174.44 inc. VAT & delivery.

The cheapest I've found it is at Misco for £171.89 inc. VAT & delivery if using this Quidco link which gives you 5% off.

I'm assuming the Quidco links give you discount off postage too? Someone care to enlighten me on this?
If not then it works out at £172.19 from Misco. I'm sure I'll forgive them the 30p ;)

Holy moly, prices really have shot down over the past few months. I remember not long ago these were going for around £400...
