Cooking in the woodburning stove?

I do it with my coal stove.
Things like soup and beef that needs time to stew. I bring it to the boil on my gas hob, then transfer it to the top of my coal stove. It simmers beautifully, wile it also heats my house.
But I don't think you can actually cook and brown meat like chicken. Although our nans used to cook on coal fires... wonder how they did it then...?
They'd have to stoke up the fire pretty hot to get meat cooking.
I'd not throw chicken into the fire though. Think you'd be looking a a chimney fire pretty quick. If not an out of controll fire in your stove with all the fat and juices dripping out.

Hello
Having damaged the slate under my wood burning stove with a money saving home glass cleaning recipe I just want to check if someone can help me.
If I put a coffee pot or pan on top of my cast iron stove can it stain or damage it.
Or does it have to be a specific metal. Any chemical reactions happen.
Sorry to sound paranoid but I dont want to do any more damage.
Thank0 -
I cook jacket potatoes in the ash tray of my woodburner. I wrap them in foil. You can also do chestnuts too they only take a few minutes. I ook things in pans on the top of the stove too, soups stews cheap cuts of meat which need hours too cook. [my woodburner is in the kitchen BTW].0

i would imagine you'd be fine with a kettle, just make sure it's not got any coating in it that could melt and mark it.
i thought you might be interested to see these, we saw these a few weeks ago they are designed for use in mobile homes and similar thats how we stumbled on them.

oldtractor great idea! never thought about using the ashpan. I also have a cast iron toastie maker that goes in my stove - it has a long handle - makes a fantastic toastie

We often use a toasting fork. Makes lovely toast and no electricity or gas used : )
We often simmer a stew or soup on the woodburner. And we make griddle scones, flatbreads, soda farls and potato farls. Lovely!0 -
I only cook on the top of mine (our only heating so on all winter). Tends to be during power cuts for boiling kettle and coffee pot. Bit of a pain for pans with the fireguard.0

We use the top of our woodburner to boil water in the kettle which we then fill a big thermos with. Ours is our only heating source except for a calor gas heater and a couple of electric heaters. Now Mrs FrugalinShropshire:T Proud to be mortgage and debt free:j0

I cook lentils and veg stews on the top of our very tiny cooker, and if I leave oats overnight in a pan with hot water, the warmth of the embers cooks them ready to be lightly heated in the morning.
It helps if you start the cooking on the gas until whatever liquid you add boils, or if it is just oil, sizzles. Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).0
