My dh has a bike just now that he uses for going to his work, 5 miles each way every day, the bike he has just now is on its way out, gears sometimes dont work etc
not sure what kind of bike would be best, couple of steep hills on the roads here
any offers on just now anywhere on bikes?
thanks

halfords have them from time to time, have a look if you're local.
your local bike shop may have last seasons models in at reduced prices (I presume he doesn't want anything too sporty or technical) they'll probably give a better service too. they generally throw in the first service for the bike after he's done a few miles, and make sure you get pedals with it (some don't come with pedals) they should be free.
also check online for pricing, evans cycles are quite good at sale prices.
if there isn't a sale on anyway (I'd be suprised) just wait, it will happen. it always does.Remember the time he ate my goldfish? And you lied and said I never had goldfish. Then why did I have the bowl Bart? Why did I have the bowl?0 -
Probably a silly question, but have you tried having the bike serviced at a bike shop? Gears and stuff do tend to stop working at times, and a repair is far cheaper than a new bike. A decent bike should last for many years.
If you do go for a new one, for on-road the choice is basically between mountain bike, hybrid, and road (racing) bike. A quick google will give more info about each type and what they're best at.0 -
he just said he wants a new bike, no idea how old the bike is, he got it off his family and they had it a few years back as well0

go for the repair route first , in fact there are many video guides to doing it yourself

I have been thinking of getting an electric bike. They seem to be a big initial outlay but get good reviews, and people do a lot more journeys wiothout the car, but without the fatigue that goes with cycling,A good cowboy always drinks upstream from the herd.

If it's all road use a hybrid bike would be best. Decent gearing for the hills, light frame to help and road tyres and set-up.
Have you tried work for the 'Cycle to work' scheme? If you can, they will give you vouchers up to £1000 worth and all you do is pay back 'x' amount each month out of your salary, less the tax! So you end up with a shiny new bike for half the origional cost, and get to pay it off over 2years too
it's a no-brainer if you can do it!
If you want advice on bikes once you've decided what you want to do, Ive just spend a few months researching bikes for the same reason! I use mine to get to work and my old one was falling apart (it was only 3/4years old, but cheap), so looked into what was best and ended up buying new rather than servicing. No regrets, the bike is lighter, easier to ride and will hold its value so much more and you can even uprate it as you go too...
