Am I right in assuming from the wording of your thread that they already have sky and that their current digibox has broken ? If so, ring Sky and tell them you intend to cancel the contract because you cannot afford a new box. They will nearly always offer you a refurbished box or a free repair in order to keep your business ! I know several people that have done this. Of course if they dont make this offer, tell them you will think things over before making any decision. Nothing to lose and everything to gain.

yes. they had the chappy out to check the aerial etc. & he said they should buy a whole new set (or something - i wasnt there) rather than just a box. i will pass your advice on - thanks!

If you have no luck with sky you could try ebay or this company sell used boxes

  • I bought a new sky box off eBay and it worked no problems.

Did they contact Sky for the engineer? as I believe authorised Sky repairs guarantee a repair/replacement for whatever the fee that has been agreed (well thats what they told me)- in my case they offered a £70+ repair, carried on with the line I would cancel and eventually they sent an engineer out for nothing - he didn't even check the box, just replaced it and the LNB with a nice shiny new one.
  • We did the same our box kept freezing and it was really slow, we told them that we wanted a new one or we would cancel which we would have done, as we are paying £40 a month and what is the point if you cant watch it properly, the least you can expect is for them to provide the equipment to be able to watch!,they eventually agreed after about 45 minutes, but we called using an 0800 number which we obtained from the web site saynoto0870, so the call cost us nothing so i would have stayed on all day as it was costing them, the engineer did not even check it, he just replaced it and the led on the dish, he also said that we coud have cancelled our subscription and started it in my name and got all the equipment for nothing and a deal on the subscription for three months, maybe your dad could try this also if he has no luck.
