E: 02/11 - Kerrang! The Album '08

Kerrang! magazine has been one of Britain’s top sources of rock’n’roll evangelism for more than twenty-five years now, and expansions into radio and TV have seen it go from strength to strength.

Kerrang! The Album ’08 brings rock to the masses, featuring two discs of first-rate bands, from household names Green Day and Nickelback to promising newcomers Elliot Minor and The Gaslight Anthem.

Happily, the variety doesn’t stop at commercial success, there’s plenty here to entertain people who don’t associate the experience of listening to music with hearing damage and whiplash. The days of nu metal domination are a thing of the past.

Of course, it’s not like heavy guitar music is a niche interest these days, and some of the tracks on this compilation have records of chart success that do nothing to compromise their rawness.

Linkin Park’s Given Up and Good Charlotte’s Keep Your Hands off My Girl are as catchy and furious as anything either band has released to date, and there’s no denying that Pendulum’s hit Propane Nightmares packs a hefty punch.
They aren’t in quite the same league of heaviness as metal mainstays Slipknot and Machine Head, whose songs Psychosocial and Aesthetics of Hate are the loudest, nastiest things on here; but the average listener in search of a musical adrenaline-shot won’t come away disappointed.

Green Day’s 2004 release American Idiot bags the award for oldest track, but it’s been three years since they put out a new single (unless you count their take on The Simpsons Theme), and they’re as representative of the Kerrang! sound as anyone.
My Chemical Romance provide another chart-topper with Welcome to the Black Parade, and Panic at the Disco’s Nine in the Afternoon comes alarmingly (and satisfyingly) close to reproducing Elton John at his piano-thumping best.
