I do not wish to appear really ignorant, but what is Firefox please?

I have always refused to my self assessment on line. I tried it once a couple of years and gave up after 30 minutes because I value my time. It takes me 40 minutes to do on paper, then I deliver it by hand to my nearest Tax Office in West London, as I'm often in their area anyway, and they forward it to the appropriate office.

Firefox is an Internet browser, like Opera or Internet Explorer. :)

  • I may be a bit thick here but what is self assessment and who has to fill it in?

My hubby started working in june 07 after not working for a long time.

Now I am concerned there are forms we should be filling in but haven't.

    Thanks.

If if he is on PAYE, ie. is paid by an employer, he doesn't need to do anything as all tax etc is taken at source.

However if he's self employed he'll have to fill in a self assessment (tax return, practically) form at some point. It may still be too early for him to do so, but best if he contacts Inland Revenue to make sure he has everything in order. :)

  • Not that this helps you much, but I've used the online system ever since it first came out and never had a problem, but I do file in august, nice and early.
  • Got to other pensions and was told to put in payer, pension and tax, did all that and came to a halt, told to see letters from work and pensions for detail.
Phoned tax office and they didn't know.
Don't have to put in name of payer in paper form so I give up.

Now I'm scared! I have my first tax return to do as I have a special needs trust and I haven't a clue what I'm doing. Was planning on doing it online soon as atm my hands are too bad to fill in the forms - now I'm wondering if it would be better to pay someone to do it - but I'm scared of how much it may cost
If my typing is pants or I seem partcuarly blunt, please excuse me, it physically hurts to type. :wall: If I seem a bit random and don't make a lot of sense, it may have something to do with the voice recognition software that I'm using!
  • I used to take my figures down to the Library and do it on their PC for several years.
I had small incomes from a lot of the sections: Employed - Self Employed - Property -
Pension - Investments - Deposits etc.

Once I had overcome the hassle of getting a password and ID it was fairly plain sailing.
One year at Xmas I had to send in a mixture of online and paper because one of my employers had sent me a P60 with a PAYE id that the system recognised as a work of fiction.
I liked it because it was all done and dusted, even paid the tax due with a bank card.

HOWEVER three years ago I was forced out of the online system because it could not cope with an untaxed income (of over 300 GBP) from Dubai. Nor could it manage trust income from the estate of a deceased person (my father!).

Anybody know if it could handle these sorts of income in its latest manifestation?
