Got our Trivial Pursuit DVD edition today @ £40 with 10% off and 500 points voucher (worth £5) effectively making it £31.
Bargain. Means I now have £37 on my Smiths card. ;D
Then there's 1000 points (worth £10) to be had on 5th December.Never argue with an idiot. He will bring you down to his level and beat you with experience.

I went to smiths today due to this offer but soon realised why they are making a loss. Even with 10% off I couldn't find anything to buy other than a magazine.
Their CD selection was basically just like Tesco, i.e only top 100 albums. But unlike Tesco their prices were not competitive. Considering I buy any chart albums form CD-WOW or Play.com I had no interest there. I looked to see if they had some less mainstream titles that you can't get from places like Play.com & Tesco but nothing.
Their DVD selection was fairly comprehensive but not very attractively displayed and not especially good value.
Books, hmm well they tend not to have anything I am interested in and computer books can be found on-line so much less than the cover price. So no interest in books.
So the only thing left is all their brick-a-brack like folders and stuff like that. Not really any interest.
To compete against the on-line retailers and supermarkets they really need to find something that sets them apart to make it worth the effort for me to get out of my seat and actually go to the shop. I think the problem with many of these brand names is they think that their well known status will keep loyal customers but i just won't work. As each new generation becomes more net savvy there will be less people who will be bothered to visit a smiths shop unless there is a real pull.
Bit of a jack of all trades, master of none. I think for shops to succeed they need to either specialize or become big shopping experiences like a supermarket.0 -
Know what you mean - some of the BOGOF on DVDs were worth it Big Fish being one and the Simpsons/Futurama/Family Guy boxsets.
They need to do more offers like Boots do as there's not enough incentive to go there and rack your points up.
Mines up to £34 but I got £20 last Christmas in points and I buy all my magazines there - so only £9 gained in store this full year.Never argue with an idiot. He will bring you down to his level and beat you with experience.

Couldn't agree more with these sentiments.
WHS is something of a dinosaur these days. A few points on a card won't attract my custom, when prices elsewhere are so much lower. I think their main kind of customer now must be older people (like me!) who don't use the net (unlike me), and who are looking for gifts for their younger relatives.
I can't see them turning round their business without a radical shake-up.Much of the social history of the Western world over the past three decades has involved replacing what worked with what sounded good. - Thomas Sowell, "Is Reality Optional?", 19930
