Debt Collection Guidance

I work for a debt management company in the voluntary sector, ie we do not charge for any of the debt work we do and we frequently come across a number of creditors who repeatidly harass people with frequent phone calls and at unreasonable hours.
Any debt collecting company, including the main banks, that work in this area has to have a licence to operate which is issued by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) and there are guidlines that they have to adhere to, otherwise they could have their licence revoked. These guidelines are the OFT's Debt Collection Guidelines and they can be foundat the following link
https://www.oft.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/50F06527-9FC5-4610-B385-999D6E2A8950/0/oft664.pdf
It is well worth reading especially section 2 about "Unfair Business Practices"
ie if you continually get harrasing / frequent calls late at night, this contravines paragraph 2.6 (a) of the guidance and the creditor can be informed that they are breaking that code and they then have to adhere to it. Failing to do so, means you can report them to the OFT.
This information is widely used by people like us to give support to people in debt, I hope it will be off use to some one.
