Filling in a P46

Hello. I work 2 jobs. I don't want one of my bosses finding out that I have another job. I've been told that if I fill in a P46, then he won't find out about my other job. Is this correct?

A P46 would be offered when you start a job and do not have a P45. Have you just started both jobs or only one of them? Is it your new boss you do not want to find out about your old job or the other way round.0 -
I would use the p46 for the second job. You will need to tick box c, which says "I have another job or receive a state or occupational pension"
The second employer may ask the question why you are ticking that box, of course!Indecision is the key to flexibility

I started my new job about 5 weeks ago (Ive been at my other workplace for 2 years). I do not want my old boss to know about my new job - my new boss is aware of the situation and says that I can either invoice him as a freelancer or he'll put me on PAYE. What do you suggest? I dont mind being put on PAYE, aslong as my old boss can't see I have another place of work. Thanks.0

If you complete a P46 for your new employer and choose box C as having another employment then you will be taxed at BR rate. This means that you will pay tax at 20% on all earnings. If you use up all your tax allowance in your first job then this will be the correct tax paid, if however you do not use all you allowance in your first job then you will be overpaying tax. This overpayment can be reclaimed at the tax year end.
Providing it stays that way your old employer should know nothing about it.
If your new job had earnings higher than your old job then it might be viewed that you would be better with your tax allowance on your new job and the BR on your old job or with a split code. I do not know if the tax office would do this without consulting you but if it did happen your old boss would not be told the reason for it but if he was well aquainted with tax he would suspect you had another job.
I would guess that your old boss is unlikely to find out that way but with all deception there is a risk of it happening or indeed a risk of it being discovered another way.
Is there anything in your contract that prevents you having another job or requires you to have permission for one?0
