Removing dental calculus (tartar)

I am on a very low income. I don't have a dentist and don't think I could afford to go even if I found one.

Is there a way of removing calculus myself? Would mouth washing in an acid or alkali solution work?

    Don't even think about it!

Check-up and a clean up on the NHS would cost £16.60.

    Ring local PCT for availability.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

I've managed to scratch most of the bits that show off with tweezers. I just need something to loosen the bits I can't get to :(

All you're removing is the tartar above the gum.

If you scratch the enamel, the surface will be rougher, and the stuff will build up quicker and do more damage to the tooth as it does.

The tartar that causes gum disease builds up below the gumline. You won't get at that, and if you convince yourself you've 'cleaned' your teeth and don't seek professional help, the damging stuff will just go on stripping away your tooth suppport.

When you feel your teeth go loose, and finally realise there's a problem, then it will be too late to do anything about it.
