unfair bank debt

hi i hope im doing this right im new to this, approxx 9 or ten years ago i had a 100 pounds in my halifax account,at that time i dont think you got a card automatically for the machines in the wall,i wanted one just for emergancies, that was all that was in the account and nothing was gonna go in i was on benefits with small children and back then my benefits were collected from the post office, they offered me a card with a 100 pound limit, they were aware there would never be money going in to that account and i wouldnt be working.i was ill and quickly after got iller,i had a mental illness which involved compulsive saving and buying(and it wasnt saving money but things) over maybe 6 months i had spent 2000 pounds on nothing,
i have never paid anything on this debt and now i owe over 3000,i didnt get asked for anything for 4 years,my argument was as a bank it was there job to take it off me well before it got to that ammount,my limit was 100 and i didnt have an overdraft, now i get a few letters asking me for this cash,my aurgument is i wasnt of sound mind at the time and although i spent it,there job was to surely take it off me well before it got to such a daft ammount,so it is there fault as well, halifax were trying to chase it up for me a few year ago to get some knocked off but they never got back to me,is there a loophole or a way to clear this debt,is it not bad practice on there behalf,
