Debt Agencies Keep Writing, Not Known

In the past year I have rec'd three letters from three different debt collection/baliff agencies. The debts range from 1000-12000. These letters are addressed to someone who has never lived at this address as far as I am aware. I know its only 3 in a year but I'm already fed up with it. I have a good credit history and the idea of baliffs turning up on my doorstep makes me:mad: . What makes them think this is the correct address, considering the originator surely has different information. Whats the best way to deal with these letters. Advice pls

Hi, just gave my husband a call as he is a manager in the fraud department of a credit card company and knows about this stuff. He has said that you need to contact the collection agencies and tell them that the person has never been a resident of the property, you also need to ask them who they are representing (if they are an agency they will be working on behalf of the company who is actually owed the debt) and then contact them directly as they will be more likely to actually change the details. Follow all of this up in writing as this will give you recourse should anything go further. He also said that as long as your credit report does not have you financially linked to this person (which I am guessing it won’t as you don’t even know them) then it will not affect your credit rating in any way.
I know it sounds like a lot of work but it is the only way to get rid of the problem. Hope that helps.

Oh by the way they will more than likely only have your address if they have been given it by the person who took out the debt. What has probably happened is that this person has taken out these debts, and then advised the companies that they have moved to your address (when they haven’t) so they can disappear without paying the money back. Unfortunately the level of fraud in the UK seems to rise as the economy goes down.

ah this happenned to us all the time when we first moved in, i returned a lot with "no longer known at this address" and a few persistent ones i called and told them over the phone. eventually you'll shake them off. besides i dont think baliffs are going to seriously do anything as long as you can prove youre not the person on the letter, most of the ones i rang were very grateful and polite - thanking me for avoiding a wasted journey for them. good luck :) and dont worry ;)

i had this problem , when i called the debt collection agency and explained the situation they were very rude and flatly refused to update their records and to stop sending letters.i did a bit of digging on the internet and found the original companies contact details and sent them an email and this seems to have sorted it.
