Is this note legal tender in Scotland?

Options
I received the following note in my change today in Tesco. Does anyone know whether this is legal tender in Scotland and, if not, can I get it changed locally at a bank to have a Scottish note. I was in a hurry and didn't have time to check my change, just bundled it into purse. Never seen one of these notes ever in my life, looks like Monopoly money. Any help/advice/info appreciated. Thank you.

There's two BOI branches in Scotland
    http://www.bankofireland.ie/html/gws/help/find/branches_britain/index.html

But no ATMs (acording to the web site) at those sites.

Ive worked in a few supermarkets and ive never seen any Irish notes, a few Scottish and I have a Channel Island pound note in my purse but never any Irish.

    Edit:

Just found this site http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/British_banknotes talks about the different bank notes and says
the Bank of Ireland, First Trust Bank, Northern Bank and Ulster Bank (accepted in Scotland, although rarely seen outside Northern Ireland).

    Hope it helps :D

  • it says it's sterling so it should be legal tender.

If you want confusing - get your head around this:

Bank of England notes are the only banknotes that are legal tender in England and Wales. Scottish, Northern Ireland, Jersey, Guernsey and Manx banknotes are not legal tender in England and Wales. However, they are not illegal under English law and creditors and traders may accept them if they so choose.

No banknotes are legal tender in Scotland (not even Scottish notes, which are 'promissory notes' - essentially cheques made out from the bank to 'the bearer', as the wording on each note says).

In contrast the coins from British dependancies like Jersey and the Isle of Man, while usually similar and sometimes found in UK change, are neither legal tender nor acceptable to UK traders and banks.

    :confused::confused:

If you take it to your local bank when passing they should be able to exchange it and save any argument in shops

it's fine! It's a sterling fiver from Northern Ireland

You're almost as bad as those English folk who refuse Scottish fivers!! ;)

Thanks for all your replies. Just wanted to be sure that I could get the money exchanged etc. I have NEVER EVER seen a Bank of Ireland bank note, ever. I thought they had the Euro or Punts or whatever. Didn't realise they had pound notes. You learn something new every day. Thanks for all your advice/tips/info etc, appreciate it. :T

Smiley_Mum...it's a Bank of Ireland note from the north of the country which is a UK/sterling area. The rest of the country is a Euro zone being the Republic of Ireland.

We have four banks which issue their own sterling notes: Northern Bank, Bank of Ireland, First Trust and the Ulster Bank. We can also spend Bank of England and Bank of Scotland notes here. Confusing or what for visitors.

You can send it to me if you want....:D

    Snowy Owl -

I paid it into my current account today for it to leave tomorrow to cover my D/Ds this month. :-( They accepted at The Bank of Scotland no problem. Thanks for all the info everyone. :-)
