Tax Refund Query

I wonder if someone can help with my tax refund query. I have just received my pay slip for the month of September expecting to get my £60 and it's not there! I queried it with our wages department and they didn't really give me a clear answer. My tax is £10 less than it was last month.

My tax code for Sept is 603LWk1 and I notice that for August it was 543LWk1, is this emergency tax, I have never noticed before? I joined my employers in March 2008 and my first salary was paid in April 08, should I really still be on emergency tax after all this time?

Am I entitled to anything, and how can I expect it come back?

Look forward to your replies !

The reason you have only got the £10 is because of the WK1. Speak to your wages dept and ask why you are still on WK1 basis. If they can't help phone your tax office. You will get the money in your paypacket as soon as they sort out the tax code.

Yes do ask them! If you began working for them in March, then on the 6th April you should have started on the new tax code and your employer should have taken you off a week 1 / month 1 (non-cumulative) basis.

My tax code has only just changed - April, May, June, July, Aug all coded 543L, Sept 603L. Also where's my £60 having worked for the same LA for the past 6 years? I usually get about £350 tax rebate for August (paid September) as I am paid term time only, only got £150 this year. Any ideas anyone????

If you had no income for September then if you were still on 543L you freepay would have gone up by 1/12 of £5439 which is £453.25. This means that this amount £453.25 is now not being taxed when it was taxed last month at 20% so you would be due back about £90. Due to your tax code changing you actually recieved £150, £90 plus the £60 tax reduction.

This assumes that you are not a 40% tax payer.

No idea how you managed to get a £350 tax rebate in past years, can you advise what the figures were that is taxable gross to date, tax paid to date, tax code and basis for the rebate month and the couple of months before.

Chrisbur - thanks for the explanation, it seems that so far this years tax/NI has been deducted correctly (ran my salary through a tax calulator) so no additional tax rebate due. In previous years I had paid too much (also ran through the calculator) so was refunded which always seemed to appear in September. The calculator also seems to suggest that I have still, despite the refunds, overpaid tax/NI by £1783.20 since 2005 (due to employer adding petrol reimbursments to my gross wage incorrectly). My case is at the tax office as we speak and by all accounts will receive this, and more, back - yippee!
  • Thank you for all your help, I have been to see my wages department and they are going to sort it out for me, was great to speak to them with some knowledge behind me !
