Rover 220 won't start

My Rover 220 1996 will not start and makes a clicking noise when I turn the Key. Managed to Jump start it this morning but this afternoon at work it will not start again. I beleive that it could be the alternator not charging the battery or a problem with the battery. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Whats the deal with the AA when your not a member as well? Do they charge you over the top massively?0

Alternator output can be checked with a multimeter on the positive battery terminal earthed to the engine block. Should be about 14v.
Might be worth taking the battery out (assuming you have stereo codes etc) and charging it up following all the precautions (remove any cover on the top of the battery, and charge in a ventilated area). You can get a charger for about £10 from wilkinsons. Also check the battery case for any cracks while removed. When removing always remove negative terminal first, then positive. When installing put positive terminal on first, then negative.
Hopefully it's something cheap like needing a new voltage regulator. Don't have a clue how easy they are to change on a Rover 220 (may need to remove the alternator) but on my car it's a doddle.
Regards AA you might be better calling up a local garage rather than them.0 -
I think the AA or RAC will come out but they charge a £10-£20 more than the normal rate of membership. But it does mean you will be covered for a whole year. The man without a signature.0

Alternator
Battery
Starter
Fan Belt
Loose Connection
Is there power in the battery? Check if lights are on full and not dim.
If battery OK then its unlikely to be alternator or battery.
Check starter by poping into gear and rock car forwards, disengage gear and try again. If that sorts it its probably the starter.
Check all belts and terminals for tightness and loose connections.
If that has all failed then you are back to the battery or alternator, follow what anewman suggests.0
