  • I know it would be tempting to buy one of the small dirt bikes you see advertised in the red-tops. And indeed that may be all that is necessary. BUT remember there is no such thing as a bargain. Be aware that you will need insurance (even if you only use it off-road), if it is used anywhere in public you need at least third party insurance, check with your local Police, they will be happy to advise. If you choose to go for it with no insurance, you could end up being in a very tricky situation, imagine if for some reason the bike is out of control and injures one of you son's friends....you would be liable. Sorry to be heavy, but that is the way it is. Also please make sure you spend lots of money on a GOOD crash helmet and some proper protective clothing and good gloves AND most importantly ALWAYS use them. Again I don't want to be heavy but 30 MPH is quick enough to seriously injure if you're unlucky (I have been there). Back to the bike if you just want to tootle around a flat field then one of the mini bikes you see advertised will be up to that, however if you want to take it a bit further and have the money to spend you must go for one of the big four (Honda,Suzuki,Kawasaki,Yamaha probably Honda) reliability and the ease of servicing and availability of parts will pay dividends in the long run, you'll even be able to sell it on as your son grows.

Sorry for the long reply and sorry for sounding negative, I'm not really. Motorbikes are great fun and I'm sure the wee lad will love the thrills and spills. It really does get in your blood. I rode my first bike when I was about seven and have always loved them, although I have been without one for nearly ten years now, since my second trip to the hospital through a bike accident (on the road). I have always believed the way to learn to properly ride a bike is off-road first. Hope this is of help.
