Dodgy Trainers

I bought a pair of running shoes 10 weeks ago. The insole has worn to such an extent that there is a hole in it under my big toe. I phoned the shop where I purchased them and they asked me to bring the shoes to the shop for inspection. When they looked at them they said they would contact the manufacturer. Two weeks later, following a further prompting from myself, they have finally got back to me. They now want me to return the shoes to the shop so that they can return them to the manufacturer for inspection/comment. This means I will be without the shoes I have paid for while the issue is resolved. Should I demand a refund or replacement product from the retailer, as I have bought the shoes from them and not the manufacturer? What are my rights in this situation?
