Felting old sweaters to make a scarf

Just read this really interesting article on recycling old sweaters in Prima online:
"Use only wool garments and felt them by washing in the washing machine at 60 degrees. This will shrink them, which means they can be cut up without fraying. Don't use a higher temperature as this could cause colour loss. Steam press when dry. We cut 20cm-wide rectangles of different lengths and stitched them together, taking 6mm seam allowances, to make a 150cm-long scarf. There is no need to neaten the edges, as felted knitwear shouldn't fray."

I'd love to give this a go! Has anyone else tried it?

I have never done this on purpose but have accidently washed one of my sons pure wool sweaters and it felted alright, another wash and it would have worked perfectly. As it was he could still fit it as it had been too big anyway ;) And it did look a bit strange, but oh well.

I think this would be quite a cute idea as long as the sweaters were actually wool. Put them through two washes and they should be perfect. Not sure one would be enough
